October 2025 Newsletter
First, we want to invite you to our monthly meeting this Thursday, October 9th, 2025 at the UMWA building (525 E 100 S) in Price at 7pm. Follow the button below the image to see the agenda.
Well so much has changed in the last month and all the while it still seems the ”same as it ever was.” The government is shut down and the GOP has decided to misconstrue the truth at every turn. Undocumented immigrants do not receive health care. The GOP has conflated health care with health services. What they don’t want to do is reimburse hospitals if an emergency room doctor treats an undocumented immigrant. This will especially put an undue burden on rural hospitals. They also want to prevent legal immigrants, working towards citizenship, to apply for health insurance through the ACA. Even more problematic, the GOP wants to end pandemic era subsidies that helped average families afford health insurance on the open ACA market. This will do two things.
First, families whose employers do not offer health insurance will be forced to drop coverage or see their premiums reach debilitating heights. This includes people who work for your average small business here in town who do not have to provide health insurance due to their size. Second, when healthy people drop insurance coverage due to the cost, the resulting premiums for the rest of us, both in and out of the ACA will see our costs rise. Currently, we spend almost $6000 more per person for inpatient and outpatient services compared to other developed nations. Surprisingly, we spend almost $700 more per person in administrative costs than other developed nations, all of which provide universal health care. All the while, every Quality-of-Life Index shows that those countries generate better outcomes when it comes to life expectancy, child mortality and morbidity etc. The GOP is adamantly opposed to Americans’ wellbeing in this regard. Our own congressman, a doctor, is opposed to his constituents’ wellbeing.
All of this is happening while the economy continues to falter, and prices continue to rise. Manufacturing is down, employment is static or falling and our GDP continues to lag when compared to previous forecasts before President Trump took office. Furloughs abound and services are being cut back and/or curtailed. Tariffs are stifling the economy and now farmers, who overwhelmingly supported President Trump are going to need a bailout, once again! This is, in essence, austerity. Austerity works so well that President Trump just approved a $20 billion line of credit because his friend, President Milei has plunged his country into an economic crisis, AGAIN, because he has adhered to the same reckless economic policies as many so-called libertarians.
But there is still hope. President Trump’s approval ratings continue to drop. The economic downturn will affect the entire middle class. Buying power is constrained and dissatisfaction is growing. At some point, we as democrats, need to be able to provide a landing place for sensible Republicans who wanted economic fixes and are absolutely exhausted by the right’s culture wars. Tolerating a masked military force in our streets is untenable and democrats need to be there to provide solutions. Finally, even Republicans are tiring with Congress’ obfuscation with the Epstein Files, even to the extent of sending house members home and refusing to swear in the pivotal vote of a new congresswoman for fear of what her vote will mean for disclosure of these abhorrent men who participated in such vile crimes.
So, what do we do? We remain patient. We serve. We show our neighbors that we are in fact, the levelheaded thinkers when it comes to this fiasco. When appropriate, we organize rallies. We elucidate the differences between the two parties. The GOP has moved dramatically to the right while Carbon County Democrats remain moderate and continue to advocate for democratic principles. What we won’t do is claim the religious high ground to bolster false arguments meant solely to distract. We stand firm with constitutional principles such as REAL separation of powers. We stand firm in our commitment to treating all people with dignity and respect. We reject stereotypes and xenophobia meant to simply inflame and blame. We help serve thanksgiving dinner to those in our community who are less fortunate than us. We do it because of our love for our community and our recognition that we are need now more than ever.
The Executive Committee of the Carbon County Democrats is honored to associate with the fine, concerned and thoughtful people who attend our events. We appreciate you for giving of your time during such trepidatious times. We are awed by your commitment to democratic principles. We ask that you stay positive during the storm. Democracy and human decency will win out. You are doing the right thing.
Regards,
The Executive Committee
